The second track of the Divača–Koper railway is the largest infrastructure project in Slovenia's history. The new line, about 27 km long, connects the Port of Koper, Slovenia's only seaport and an important gateway for Central European trade, with the national rail network. Once in service, it will substantially increase freight capacity on one of the busiest routes in the region.
The construction works are carried out by a consortium that includes Kolektor CPG, Yapı Merkezi and Özaltın. The route crosses the demanding karst terrain between Divača and the coast with around 20 km of tunnels, including the 6.7 km Lokev tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Slovenia, as well as several viaducts such as Glinščica, Gabrovica and Vinjan.
Concrete supply for tunnels and viaducts
Tunnel linings, portals and viaduct structures require large volumes of concrete produced to strict specifications and delivered without interruption. On a mountainous site with changing weather conditions, the reliability of the concrete batching plant directly affects the construction schedule.
For this critical supply, Yapı Merkezi once again chose MEKA. The two companies have worked together on major rail projects before, including the Awash–Kombolcha–Hara Gebaya railway in Ethiopia, the standard gauge railway in Tanzania and the Dakar Regional Express Train in Senegal.
Why MEKA
The new Divača–Koper line is scheduled to open in 2026. With both tracks in service, the route will be able to handle more than twice as many trains as today, strengthening the Port of Koper's role as a logistics hub between the Adriatic and Central Europe. MEKA is proud to contribute to this landmark project with its concrete batching technology.
